Yad Ezra V’shulamit has adapted their organization to keep fighting poverty in Israel, despite the difficult situation.

Keeping children under the poverty line fed in Israel is a challenge during a lockdown. Even with the government trying to ease closures, the majority of children are still at home.

Yad Ezra V’Shulamit normally feeds 535 children a day a hot lunch in their children’s centers throughout Israel. What happens to those children now?

“We deliver! We now pack up nutritious hot meals 7 days a week and bring it to the door of those families who we know don’t have food,” says Aryeh Lurie, founder of Yad Ezra V’Shulamit. “We give food to the kids who usually come to our centers, and their families get a food voucher. We are just trying to keep everyone fed.”

With unemployment skyrocketing, there are thousands of people who are the ‘new poor’ who need help even for basic foods. “We normally distribute 3,500 food baskets each week, now we are up to 4,500 baskets because of the virus and we are being inundated with phone calls for help,” said Lurie.

The cost of feeding a child is $56 a week and $224 a month. “I know everyone has been effected by the virus in one way or another. We all want our children to have the food they need to grow and develop.

If everyone would take on to feed one child in Israel, we can make it through this crisis to better times together. To feed a child in Israel, go to www.yadezra.net/corona
