Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara and his wife Yukiko saved 6,000 Jews during the Holocaust, risking their careers and their lives.

When Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese consul in Lithuania during the Holocaust, saw Jews who were fleeing persecution gathered in front of his office, he didn’t hesitate to help and issued thousands of life-saving visas.

Thanks to his efforts, dedication and hard work, 6,000 Jews were saved and some 40,000 descendants are alive today.

Chiune and Yukiko Sugihara have been honored by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum as “Righteous Gentiles.”
