After more than 2700 years of exile, a new group of Jews from India, known as B’nei Menashe, finally came home.
A group of 102 Jews from India, whose ancestors were banished by the Assyrians from the Land of Israel 2700 years ago, arrived in Israel recently thanks to Shavei Israel, an organization dedicated to bringing communities of “lost Jews” back home and helping them to settle properly.
Throughout their sojourn in exile, Shavei Israel explains, the B’nei Menashe [“sons of Menasseh”], believed to be among the “10 Lost Tribes” banished by the Assyrians from the Land of Israel, continued to practice Jewish traditions and customs as well as nourishing the dream of one day returning to the land of their ancestors.
These most recent arrivals from India join approximately 3000 others from their community who, due to the efforts of Shavei Israel, have made aliya (immigration to Israel) in recent years, including more than 1,100 in the past four years. Some 7,000 B’nei Menashe remain in India.
