Qatar may halt its monthly cash infusions to Hamas which could further destabilize the Gaza Strip, the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the Qatari delegate Mohammed Al Emadi told leaders of Hamas and other political factions during a recent visit that it “would be very difficult to renew the cash grant, estimated at $30 million per month.”
The report also indicated how much the citizens of Gaza are suffering under Hamas leadership
“According to official and civil statistics, the poverty and unemployment rate in Gaza is among the highest in the world. New data released by the Ministry of Development in Gaza shows that the rate of poverty and unemployment has increased this year to nearly 75%, while 70% of the population of the Gaza Strip are ‘food insecure’ and 33.8% ‘below the extreme poverty line,’” Al-Akhbar reports.
Al-Akhbar cited unnamed Hamas sources that said if Qatar halts its massive monthly gift, then Israel must transfer tax funds to the Finance Ministry in Gaza or face the consequences.
“Non-renewal means heading to an explosion in the face of the Israeli occupation, the first and last responsible for the siege,” the sources told the Lebanese news outlet.
Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar made his terror group’s intentions even more explicit, threatening,”If we come to the conclusion that the situation in Gaza will be worsened, we will bomb Tel Aviv and cause red alert alarms for six months.”
Sinwar made the threats at a rally in the Gaza Strip on Monday. “The missiles manufactured in the Gaza Strip will turn the world’s most powerful tanks into singed iron,” he added
“We have a military force in the Strip that the enemy is afraid of. We have hundreds of miles of tunnels, hundreds of control rooms above and below ground, thousands of anti-aircraft missiles and thousands of mortars. We can turn enemy cities into ghost towns if they decide to attack us,” he added.
