President Trump specifically mentions Friedman and Ric Grenell when asked about potential candidates to fill the position, noting as many as 30 people had expressed interest.

US President Donald Trump is considering David Friedman, a familiar face and strong ally to Israel, to become his next ambassador to the United Nations.
Though Congresswoman Elise Stefanik had initially been selected for the position, Trump last week withdrew her nomination over concerns that her exit from the House of Representatives might threaten the GOP’s razor-thin House majority. Republicans hold just 220 seats to Democrats’ 215, with two Republican-won seats currently vacant.
Asked in the Oval Office on Monday who he is seeking to replace Stefanik, Trump said as many as 30 people were interested in the job. He specifically mentioned Ric Grenell, who served as ambassador to Germany during Trump’s first term, and former ambassador to Israel Friedman.
“I can tell you that for the replacement, we have a lot of people that have asked about it and would like to do it,” Trump said. “David Friedman, Ric Grenell, and maybe 30 other people. Everyone loves that position. That’s a star-making position. And so we’ll see what happens. But we have a lot of people that are interested in going to the United Nations, as you can imagine.”
David Friedman, 66, served as Trump’s personal attorney before his 2016 election victory, when he joined the transition team. During Trump’s first term, he served as US ambassador to Israel and played a key role in the 2020 Abraham Accords.
Since leaving the administration, Friedman has been dedicated to advancing the Jewish People’s sovereignty over its biblical homeland, writing a book and founding a think tank, both of which are called “One Jewish State,” which promote Jewish sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.
