The weekly Torah portion of “Shemot” (Exodus 1:1 -6:1) begins with the story of the Jews’ descent into slavery in Egypt.

The meaning of the word “Shemot” is “names.” One of the great merits the Jewish people had – that led to their redemption – was maintaining their Jewish identity under extremely difficult conditions.

Rabbi Enkin presents a class on Jewish names, Jewish dress, Jewish languages and other trimmings and that helped keep Jews identifying as ‘Jewish’ throughout the exile.
