What did he intend to do with all that? Israeli authorities busted a EU diplomat who attempted to smuggles millions in goods into Israel.

An attempt by a European Union (EU) diplomat to smuggle a significant amount of gold, smartphones and steroids from Jordan into Israel was exposed by Israeli authorities at the Allenby Bridge Crossing in the Jordan Valley on Thursday.

A car used by a political consultant for the EU in the Middle East was stopped for a routine check by Israeli authorities as he attempted to enter Israel form Jordan.

Customs inspectors found some 700 smartphones, tens of kilograms of jewelry and gold bullion thought to be made of pure gold and a number of steroids ampoules. The total value of the smuggled cargo, which was termed by authorities as “highly irregular,” is estimated to be worth some NIS 10 million (about $2.5M).

The diplomat and his driver were taken in for questioning at the customs offices in Jerusalem. The diplomat was released, and the driver, a Palestinian, was brought to the Jerusalem Magistrates Court and has been remanded until Sunday.
