During routine work, foresters working in northern Israel made an unusual discovery: a flock of long-eared owls in pine trees.

Foresters working as part of Keren Kayemeth l’Israel-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), during routine work in northern Israel, came upon a rare and spectacular sight: a flock of long-eared owls in pine trees. They believe the owls had likely gathered there during the winter period.

The long-eared owl, a nocturnal bird of prey, was once a rare sight in Israel, but in recent years it has proliferated. Like a number of other species of birds, the long-eared owl has become more common in the North and similar areas, having become accustomed to the expanded, man-made forests.

Soon – prior to the nesting season – the owls should separate into couples for the breeding and nesting season, a KKL-JNF news release explains.

“We assume that the flock of owls chose this place due to the fact that this is a mature forest of lofty pine trees which provide them shelter and security during the winter time,” states KKL-JNF Chief Scientist Dr. Omri Boneh. “Lately, an upward trend appears to be in observations of birds of prey in mature forests. This trend emphasizes the importance of forests as green lungs and ecological habitats for many species of animals.”

Since its establishment in 1901, KKL-JNF has served as trustee in the name of the Jewish people over the Land of Israel. The non-profit organization was founded to buy and develop the land when it was still under the Turkish Ottoman Empire and, later, British-mandated Palestine – until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

KKL-JNF is known for its expertise in researching and investigating how to best maintain forests and woodlands. According to its website, it “is leading the quest for a more environmental Israel; creating open spaces, forests and recreation areas – all in appreciation for our natural and cultural heritage.”

Only recently, also in the North, KKL-JNF celebrated the laying of a cornerstone for a state-of-the-art bird sanctuary visitor and education center in the Hula Valley.

In 2002, the JNF was awarded the prestigious Israel Prize for lifetime achievement and special contribution to society and the State of Israel.
