Israeli MMA fighter Shimon Smotritsky, known by the nickname “The Assassin,” returned to the win column over the weekend, defeating James Porter by unanimous decision after three rounds in a bout held in California under the 559 Fights banner – an evening marked not only by athletic success but by a visible display of Israeli pride in the face of hostility.
Competing before what Smotritsky later described as a hostile and antisemitic crowd, the Israeli fighter secured his 12th career victory following a disciplined performance that sent the fight to the judges’ scorecards.
As the judges’ verdict confirmed his victory, boos and insults rang out from the stands. Smotritsky responded by lifting the Israeli flag high inside the octagon, transforming the moment into a statement of identity and resilience that he later shared on social media.
“Right after the win, hundreds of people in the crowd cursed and booed,” Smotritsky wrote. “In moments like these, I am more proud than ever to represent my country.”

In a separate video posted online, Smotritsky addressed remarks made by members of his opponent’s team, who he said referred to him as a “dirty fighter.” He dismissed the comments while underscoring the personal meaning of the moment.
“I guess not everyone was raised with the same values of sportsmanship,” he said. “My greatest satisfaction was knowing how much it burned them inside to see my hand raised while I was holding the Israeli flag.”
Despite the tense atmosphere surrounding the bout, Smotritsky, “The Assassin,” struck an optimistic tone afterward, saying he is already focused on his next challenge as he continues to represent Israel on the international MMA stage with pride.
