Now that the Trump peace plan might become a reality, each and every one of us has the obligation to do whatever we can to make sure that all of Jerusalem remains under Israeli sovereignty.
Today, Israel celebrates Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day, the anniversary of the reunification of the Israeli capital.
With nearly 950,000 signatures from around the world to date, The Jerusalem Declaration, a unique project launched by United with Israel (UWI), reads: “I declare that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish People and support all efforts to maintain and strengthen a united Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel.”
On June 7, 1967, the Israel Defense Forces liberated the Old City of Jerusalem in the Six Day War, when the tiny Jewish state was threatened with annihilation by the surrounding Arab countries – including Jordan, which had occupied the eastern half of the city since 1948.
As explained by Israel’s Foreign Ministry, following the miraculous victory, “Israel immediately committed itself to freedom of religion and freedom of access to the holy sites for members of all faiths.”
This was the first time since the destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70 AD that the Old City, the Temple Mount and the Western Wall had been unified under Jewish sovereignty and the first time in history that members of all three monotheistic faiths could pray there freely.
For the past 2,000 years, Jews all over the world have faced the site of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem when praying.
Netanyahu Thanks UWI for Jerusalem Declaration
In May 2017, a few days before the 50th Yom Yerushalayim, UWI visited then-Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, then-Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and then-Education Minister Naftali Bennett, presenting each of them with The Jerusalem Declaration, which by then had over half a million signatures of people from 168 countries demanding that Jerusalem remain united as the eternal capital of the Jewish state.
The thick, 1124-page hardcover book included an introduction and the names and nationalities of the hundreds of thousands of signatories.
At around the same time, a copy also reached Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, who made history by recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital seven months later, on December 6, 2017 and moving the American Embassy to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018.
Upon receiving his own copy of The Jerusalem Declaration, Netanyahu sent a letter of thanks to UWI founder and director Michael Gerbitz.
“It was most gratifying to see this tangible expression of the unwavering support of more than half a million of our friends from 168 countries around the world,” Netanyahu wrote.
“The people of Israel appreciate United with Israel’s advocacy, educational efforts and unflinching defense of the truth,” the prime minister added.
The number of signatories has nearly reached 950,000 and is constantly growing. We’re aiming for at least a million!
