Fifteen cars in Denver’s Washington Park neighborhood were vandalized with anti-Semitic and racist graffiti on Monday night.
Residents found their cars spray-painted with swastikas and racist words and messages such as “nigger” “Made in Mexico” and “LAND OF THE NAZI.” Police are investigating but have no suspects.
Residents cleaning the white paint off their cars told Denver news sites they believed their neighborhood was chosen randomly to spread fear. Others weren’t so sure.
“In this neighborhood, there’s a lot of BLM flags in windows and signs. A lot of LGBTQ support in this neighborhood, and it’s crazy to see this here,” Ryan Turch told Denver’s KDVR News.
“It definitely makes you aware that racism is in our community, close by. It’s just wild,” Annika Mueller told CBS4. “It’s a hate crime, so it’s disconcerting.”
A report on anti-Semitism in the U.S. released by the Anti-Defamation League in April noted an elevated number of incidents in Colorado in 2020. The 60 incidents cited in the ADL audit included flyers blaming Jews for Covid, a banner blaming Jews for the 9/11 attacks, the “Zoombombing” of a Jewish funeral by someone identifying himself as Adolf Eichmann as well as other incidents of harassment and vandalism.
