The Hashmonaim Brigade aims to expand to a force of 60 to 80 combat soldiers, with plans to incorporate ultra-Orthodox reservists.

By JBN Staff

The Israel Defense Forces has announced the formation of a new all-ultra-Orthodox combat unit named after the Maccabees from the story of Chanukah.

Unlike the recent issuance of 7,000 mandatory draft notices to the ultra-Orthodox community, the “Hashmonaim Brigade” takes a different approach. It focuses on voluntary enlistment, working through dialogue with yeshiva leaders and community rabbis to build trust between the military and the ultra-Orthodox community.

Starting with a core group of 30 handpicked recruits and growing interest from potential candidates, the Hashmonaim Brigade aims to expand to a force of 60 to 80 combat soldiers, with plans to incorporate ultra-Orthodox reservists through intensive training programs.

The brigade maintains strict adherence to religious observance. Soldiers must follow modest speech guidelines, use only filtered mobile phones, and wear traditional ultra-Orthodox clothing during prayers and meals. To maintain these religious standards, all training takes place within the brigade, separate from other units. Any violations of this strict religious code will result in immediate discharge.

“I have the privilege of commanding the ultra-Orthodox brigade and being part of this extraordinary project that has the potential to bring meaningful change to Israeli society and the Jewish people as a whole.” brigade commander Colonel Avinoam Emunah tells Ynet.

“For the first time since the founding of the IDF and the establishment of the state, we’ve created a brigade that allows the ultra-Orthodox community to enlist, fight and serve while preserving their way of life and their identity,” he said.

“I invite you—those who feel the calling to defend their land, their people and their country—to join us and take part in something historic, something unprecedented. Be part of the beginning of this blessing.”
