The Pacific island nation of Nauru announced Wednesday that it will open an embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the 10th country to establish an embassy in Israel’s capital.

The decision follows a meeting last month between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Nauru’s Vice President and Foreign Minister Lionel Aingimea. It also comes less than a week after Sa’ar announced a similar agreement with Colombia’s incoming foreign minister to move that country’s embassy to Jerusalem.

“Thank you, Nauru!” Sa’ar wrote on X, thanking President David Adeang and Aingimea for the Cabinet’s decision.

“Nauru’s embassy is expected to be the 10th embassy in Jerusalem, and the fifth since I took office, coming after I also reached an agreement last week with Colombia’s incoming foreign minister on a similar move,” Sa’ar said.

Calling Nauru “a true friend of Israel,” Sa’ar said the new embassy would further strengthen ties between the two countries.

“The Foreign Ministry, under my leadership, will provide all the necessary assistance to open the embassy as soon as possible,” he said. “We look forward to hosting you soon in Jerusalem, our eternal capital.”

Sa’ar concluded his statement by quoting Psalm 122:6: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you prosper.”

Nauru is a tiny independent island nation in the South Pacific with a population of approximately 12,000, making it one of the world’s smallest countries. Despite its size, it has consistently supported Israel in international forums and maintained friendly diplomatic relations with the Jewish state.

The move marks another diplomatic victory for Israel’s efforts to encourage more countries to recognize Jerusalem as its capital by establishing embassies in the city.
