Angelina Jolie renewed her criticism over the war in Gaza this weekend, sharing dramatic before-and-after satellite images of Rafah and telling her nearly 16 million Instagram followers, “You can now open Google Earth and see what was done to Gaza.”

“Whole neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble,” Jolie wrote, pointing to damage to homes, schools, universities, hospitals, roads and water and sanitation systems.

Citing United Nations satellite analysis, Jolie said that 82% of structures in Gaza had been damaged as of June 16, with roughly two-thirds of those assessed as destroyed.

The scale of destruction across Gaza is extensive, but Jolie’s post made no mention of the Hamas-led October 7 massacre that triggered the war or Hamas’ extensive use of civilian areas for military operations.

Hamas-led terrorists invaded southern Israel on October 7, 2023, murdering approximately 1,200 people and abducting 251 others.

Throughout the war, the IDF has documented Hamas weapons, rocket launchers, command centers and tunnel infrastructure inside or beneath civilian areas, including homes, schools, mosques and hospitals.

Jolie instead focused on the humanitarian consequences of the war and the challenges facing Gazans as winter approaches.

“As winter approaches, 1.98 million people or 94% of Gaza’s population need shelter assistance and essential items,” she wrote, adding that aid and shelter materials continue to face “restrictions and delays.”

“Google Earth shows the physical destruction with extraordinary clarity,” Jolie continued. “What it cannot show is what it means to live among it, what happened to the families who were killed, and what life is like for those who survived.”

Jolie then issued a series of demands for the months ahead.

“People need shelter before winter,” she wrote, calling for humanitarian aid to reach civilians “at the scale required” and for hospitals to receive medical supplies.

She also called for conditions that would allow Gazans to rebuild their homes, schools, hospitals and communities.

The post continues Jolie’s years-long pattern of publicly criticizing Israel’s conduct in Gaza since the outbreak of the war.

In January, she traveled to the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing as part of a humanitarian visit focused on wounded Palestinians and efforts to deliver aid into Gaza.

Jolie has repeatedly used her large social media platform to criticize Israel’s conduct during the war.

In April 2025, she shared a message declaring that Gaza had become a “mass grave” for Palestinians and humanitarian workers.

Her criticism dates back to the opening weeks of the war. In November 2023, Jolie accused Israel of carrying out the “deliberate bombing of a trapped population who have nowhere to flee” and described Gaza as an “open-air prison” that was “fast becoming a mass grave.”

In her latest post, Jolie argued that the updated satellite imagery makes the consequences of nearly three years of war impossible to ignore.

“The destruction is visible. The needs are known,” she concluded. “What matters now is whether they are met.”
