This Chanukah arrives at a time of deep challenge for the Jewish people. Since the October 7 Hamas massacre in Israel, Jews around the world have faced deadly terrorist attacks and a sharp rise in antisemitism.
Even during this sacred holiday, the horrific Chanukah terror attack in Australia yesterday served as a painful reminder that hatred still seeks to target Jewish life simply for being Jewish.
Chanukah commemorates the victory of a small, outnumbered Jewish people over the mighty Greek army and the triumph of faith over repression.
The menorah’s light, kindled in the face of darkness, teaches us that terror and intimidation do not have the final word.
Then as now, the Jewish people endure, and the light of Jewish faith, identity, and resilience continues to shine.
This year, that message was powerfully reflected at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where a former hostage lit the Chanukah menorah.
In the shadow of unimaginable trauma, that moment of light and faith reminded the world that the Jewish spirit cannot be broken and that even after great darkness, hope endures.
In moments like these, our response must be unity and resolve. We must stand united with Israel and with Jewish communities everywhere, drawing strength from our shared history, our faith, and our unbreakable bond to the Jewish homeland.
As the Chanukah lights continue to grow each night, may they bring comfort to the grieving, strength to the fearful, and hope to all.
