Protesters targeted people waiting to attend a performance by Jewish comedian Jerry Seinfeld in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, confronting audience members and striking photos of Seinfeld and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with shoes over Seinfeld’s public support for Israel.
Demonstrators gathered outside the venue and shouted slogans including “U.S. imperialist, number one terrorist,” “Image we will shatter, genocide ain’t a laughing matter,” “Shame on Jerry, shame,” and “Free, free Palestine.”
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration were present in the area along with officers from the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, patrolling around The Wharf.
One protester addressed people standing in line, saying, “We’re dying in a war that Israel started. Israelis have free healthcare, and yet we’re paying for their defense budget. Make sense of that. Americans are dying in a war that Israel started. Jerry Seinfeld is in the Epstein files. Dozens of times.”
“If you support that, sir, you are un-American. Jerry Seinfeld is un-American,” he said.
Another demonstrator held up a photograph of Seinfeld with red marks crossing out his eyes.
A woman repeatedly struck the picture with her shoe until the paper was torn away from the cardboard beneath it.
A photograph of Netanyahu, whose eyes were similarly crossed out in red, was then held up for another protester to hit with a shoe.
Activists also shouted accusations at people entering the venue, alleging that Seinfeld had helped normalize the war in an effort to discourage people from attending the performance.
One woman told the camera, “Jerry Seinfeld is part of the propaganda campaign to normalize the genocidal Zionist project in Israel, and for a long time, he has publicly supported Israel.”
“He supported the IDF. He supported Netanyahu. He supported the genocidal policies of the Zionist colonial state,” she added.
