An Arab-Israeli ambulance driver has been indicted on charges of spying for Iran after allegedly exploiting his job to gather intelligence on Israeli hospitals, senior officials, and other sensitive locations in exchange for tens of thousands of shekels.
Amir Hisham Mohammed Titi, 34, of the Galilee village of Bi’ina, was arrested following a joint investigation by the Shin Bet and the Northern District Police’s Central Investigations Unit. An indictment was filed Thursday in the Haifa District Court.
According to the indictment, the defendant used his unrestricted access to hospitals across Israel as an ambulance driver to photograph and collect information on the emergency and routine preparedness of several medical centers, which prosecutors say he passed on to his Iranian handlers.
Authorities allege that during one visit to a hospital in northern Israel, Titi secretly photographed President Isaac Herzog while the president was touring the facility.
Beyond the intelligence he allegedly gathered through his work, prosecutors say Titi carried out several additional missions at the direction of Iranian intelligence.
These included photographing Hostages Square in Tel Aviv while holding a sign displaying the images of Israeli hostages, documenting an anti-government protest at Horev Junction in Haifa, and photographing the community of Amikam, where former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant lived.
Israeli authorities allege Titi was paid tens of thousands of shekels for completing the intelligence-gathering missions on behalf of Iranian operatives.
The case is the latest in a growing series of alleged Iranian espionage plots uncovered by Israeli security agencies since the outbreak of the war, many of which involved Israeli citizens recruited online and paid to carry out intelligence and surveillance missions inside Israel.
