Dr. Norman Rosenbaum, a Jewish surgeon who donated ambulances to Israel and saved an estimated 132,000 lives, passed away at the age of 90.

A member of Cockfosters and North Southgate Synagogue, Rosenbaum crowdfunded and donated 16 ambulances to Magen Dovid Adom (MDA) over a 20-year period.

He also established a donor base for MDA in north London.

Jewish News reports that, according to data released in 2019, just 12 of these vehicles had collectively responded to over 75,000 emergency incidents. These included 46 terror-related emergencies, 2,760 cases involving children, and 997 childbirths. One particular ambulance, donated in 2010 through the support of Jewish News and Cockfosters Synagogue, alone attended more than 10,000 calls.

MDA UK estimates that the ambulances Rosenbaum donated saved 132,000 lives.

He also donated a vehicle at the Sopwell House in Hertfordshire in honor of Prince William.\In 2021, Rosenbaum was appointed as an honorary manager of Magen David Adom in Israel and vice-president of the UK branch.

Upon his passing, UK MDA chief executive Daniel Burger said, “Magen David Adom UK mourns the loss of Norman Rosenbaum, an exceptional individual who taught me personally so much about chesed (kindness).”

“Norman is the essence of a mensch and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him,” he added.

Rosenbaum received MDA Israel’s Humanitarian of the Year award and the UK Prime Minister’s Points of Light award in 2018, as well as the Jewish News‘ Night of Heroes Award, which he declined so that the honor could be given instead to Kerry Rosenfeld, who had raised £7m for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research.

“In my 50-year career as a rabbi, there are very few individuals I’ve encountered who so fully embodied the ideals of Jewish communal responsibility and compassion for others,” said Rabbi Yisroel Fine, who led the congregation of Cockfosters and North Southgate Synagogue for 27 years.
