Brown University Investigating Anti-Semitic Graffiti

Brown University is investigating anti-Semitic and anti-gay graffiti found in a campus building that houses a Jewish fraternity and another fraternity with gay members.

President Christina Paxson in an email Friday to the Brown community said campus police will investigate the incident at Marcy House. She expressed her “frustration, distress and outrage” at the “homophobic and anti-Semitic graffiti.”

“While the graffiti has been removed, the impact of identity-based bias and threat is not easily wiped away. This incident impacts not only those immediately involved, but threatens our shared sense of safety and respect on campus,” the email said.

The graffiti was discovered early Friday morning scrawled across the house’s walls. It included the messages “Gay will die” and “Holocaust 2.0” written in black marker.

A university spokesman told the Providence Journal that Beta Rho Pi, a Jewish fraternity, and Zeta Delta Xi, a co-ed fraternity with many LGBTQ members, live in the house.

“One message was directly across from my dorm room, apparently reacting to the Hebrew writing and Mezuzah on my door,” wrote Sam Rubinstein, a student, to the Brown Daily Herald.

US campuses have seen a surge of anti-Semitic violence in the past few years.
