German authorities announced Sunday they arrested an Iranian national suspected of plotting chemical attack.

On Sunday, German officials released information related to the arrest of a 32-year-old Iranian suspected of planning a potentially deadly chemical attack.

The suspect was detained early Sunday morning in Castrop-Rauxel, reported the Associated Press.

“Islamic extremism” was cited as the motivation in the AP report, which added that the suspect has already allegedly acquired multiple toxins, including ricin and cyanide. Evidence of the plot was collected by “specialists wearing anti-contamination suits,” who removed items from the suspect’s home.

Among the chemical attacks German authorities have foiled was a plot five years ago in which a Tunisian couple were arrested on suspicion of planning a ricin attack on behalf of the ISIS/Islamic State terror group. The man and woman are now serving sentences of 10 and eight years in prison, respectively.

Since September, Iran has been rocked by nationwide protests in response to the death of a young woman named Mahsa Amini, who died in custody of Iran’s morality police for violating the regime’s Islamic dress code. Over 500 protesters have been killed and 19,000 people have been placed under arrest, calling into question the sustainability of Iran’s repressive regime.

Despite domestic strife, Iran continues to transfer weapons to the Hezbollah terror group, which seeks Israel’s destruction. Iran’s activities vis a vis terror proxies in the region have resulted in repeated Israeli strikes on Iranian assets and allies in Syria.

Last week, Israel allegedly fired missiles at the Damascus Airport, shutting it down temporarily, killing two soldiers, and wounding two other fighters, according to the Syrian army.

The attack was the second within a little over half a year to stop service at Damascus Airport.

While Israel did not confirm or deny the Monday night strike, it has on multiple occasions targeted Syrian infrastructure used to transport Iranian arms to the Jewish state’s doorstep.

Back in June, Israeli airstrikes damaged the Damascus Airport’s runways, shutting it down for two weeks.
