Ron Abbuttbul, who was seriously injured while serving in Operation Protective Edge in 2014 for the Israel Defense Force (IDF), is now engaged. The proposal happened on Sunday at the Orot Rabin power plant, which is operated by the Israel Electrical Company.

Abbuttbul served in the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion during Operation Protective Edge. His brigade became barricaded in a home. Abbuttbul was dispatched by his corporate commander on a mission outside the house.

Leaving its walls, he was bombarded with heavy fire. Shrapnel entered his neck, critically wounding him. As he lay on the floor, a sniper shot him in the head.

Following four-and-a-half years of rehabilitation, the disabled soldier began working at the electric company. At a company conference on diversity and inclusion, Abbuttbul told management about the efforts made to integrate him despite his disabilities.

Learning that Abbuttbul planned to ask his girlfriend, Lee, to marry him, the company decided to help him make it a proposal to remember.

Abbuttbul proposed 250 meters (820.2 feet) above sea level, by the side of the chimney, at the Orot Rabin power plant, according to the Jerusalem Post. “Will you marry me?” was written on a sign designed by the electric company for the young couple.

In attendance were immediate family and staff.

Abbuttbul told the Post, “The [electric company] program gave me a framework through which I could reintegrate back into routine life and have a stable job and income. The feeling I had that someone who supported me and had my back – and believed in me and my strengths – was invaluable in my returning to regular life and finding Lee of course.”

Operation Protective Edge

During Operation Protective Edge, IDF ground forces were sent into the Gaza Strip following 2,622 rockets and mortars being fired into Israel from the beginning of the operation until late July 2014.

The army destroyed 32 Hamas underground tunnels used to enter Israel for the purpose of terror and kidnappings in Israel.

Tons of Hamas supplies for future terror attacks were found during the operation and a massive plot to attack southern Israel on the Jewish New Year of Rosh HaShana was foiled.

A total of 82,201 IDF reservists were called up throughout the 50-day campaign.

According to the Israeli government, 66 soldiers were killed and hundreds of others were wounded, with several Israeli civilians killed by rocket or mortar strikes and tens of others wounded by shrapnel.
