Se da la circunstancia de que Kristal, nacido en Polonia el 15 de septiembre de 1903, es un superviviente del Holocausto (Shoá) y del tétrico campo de Auschwitz, en el que murió su primera esposa. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial se instaló en Haifa, Israel, donde sigue viviendo.
(Lejáim es la palabra que usan los judíos en los brindis, y significa “por la vida”).
