En mayo de 1948, las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel (FDI) empezaron oficialmente a actuar como la organización militar de Israel, en lugar de la variedad de grupos separados que lo precedieron.

Guiado por el primer Jefe del Estado Mayor, el Tte. Grl. Yaakov Dori, las FDI tomaron el papel oficial para defender el Estado de Israel y a sus ciudadanos.
