Food stall owner: “The Jewish community. There are too many of you.”

French authorities opened an investigation after a food stall owner at the Les Deux Alpes resort in the French Alps was recorded complaining about the number of Jewish vacationers and reportedly refusing to sell products to Jewish customers.
The 22-second video spread widely on social media and prompted angry reactions, French newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré reported Saturday. The woman operates a food stand near the resort’s summer toboggan run.
“There are too many Jews around here, it annoys people!”

“There are too many of you,” the woman tells a customer in the video.
When the customer asks, “Who is ‘too many of us,’ ma’am?” she responds: “The Jewish community. There are too many of you.”
The man recording the exchange then asks, “And then what?”
“And then what? At some point, it’s too much for people,” the woman replies.
Another portion of the conversation shared on social media shows the man objecting to the remarks and reminding the woman that French law prohibits discrimination and punishes antisemitic statements.
The video was brought to the attention of France’s interior and justice ministers as well as the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the National Gendarmerie was investigating the incident with the prosecutor’s office.
“The National Gendarmerie has opened an investigation in cooperation with the prosecutor’s office. The woman involved will have to answer for the remarks that were made, which I strongly condemn and which have no place in our republic,” Nuñez said.
No police complaint had been filed at that stage, Le Dauphiné Libéré reported. Investigators were expected to conduct checks to verify the video and obtain the business owner’s account of the incident.
The exchange occurred at Les Deux Alpes, a mountain resort in France that operates during the summer as well as during the ski season. The video prompted widespread online discussion about the treatment of Jewish vacationers and antisemitic remarks in France.
