Guatemala announced the inauguration of a third street in the country called “Jerusalem — Capital of Israel Street.”

The street was announced in the municipality of Tiquisate in the city of Escuintla, the sixth largest in the country, Aurora-Israel reported last week.

The report said that this initiative is being driven by the Israeli ambassador Mattanya Aharon Cohen, who challenged mayors in Guatemala to extend this honor to their cities.

“I am happy and proud that Guatemala is still a true friend of Israel and is so far the only country in the world where there are streets with the name ‘Jerusalem – Capital of Israel,'” he said.

While many countries have Jerusalem streets, Guatemala is the only nation with streets recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

This comes only months after the country moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Relations between Israel and Guatemala have been significantly strengthened over the past year, including several meetings between Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with talk of a possible visit by the Israeli president to Guatemala in 2019.
