Hebrew University researchers and the IDF’s Medical Corps have developed a treatment for hemorrhagic shock, an often fatal condition characterized by extreme blood loss.
The treatment is expected to reduce casualties on the battlefield and in civilian emergency situations.
Currently, severe blood loss is the main preventable cause of fatalities in trauma cases.
Dr. Ariel Furer and Dr. Maya Simhoni from the Hebrew University and the Military Medicine Institute led the study that joined the forces of Hadassah Medical Center and the IDF Medical Corps.
The results, published in medical journals, show the crucial role the protein Kinase C-epsilon (PKC-ε) plays in halting hemorrhagic shock.
In the experiment, pigs experiencing hemorrhagic shock that were given PKC-ε activating peptide five minutes after the bleeding began showed survival rates of 73% compared to the rate of untreated animals, just 25%.
In addition to having stronger survival rates, animals treated with PKC-ε activating peptide showed more stable blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac functioning.
Also, a detailed mitochondrial activity analysis demonstrated that the PKC-ε activating peptide helped the organs maintain adequate energy levels, protecting against further damage in trauma situations involving blood loss.
“The results we obtained are significant and consistent. It’s not just about improving survival rates—we also observed clear improvements in critical physiological markers like heart rate, blood pressure and cardiac output,” said Lt. Col. Dr. Ariel Furer.
Dr Maya Simhoni explained, “Our goal is to provide treatment immediately after an injury, to stabilize patients experiencing severe bleeding, whether in civilian or military trauma scenarios. We believe this study will raise the survival rates of severely injured individuals.”
