The Jewish community of Mumbai is mourning the loss the of two Jewish brothers, Alan and Israel Vasker, who perished in a river near Mumbai, Ynet reported.
The two played for the Indian cricket team for the Maccabiah Games sporting competition in Israel.
According to Ynet, the two, 23 and 25, were boating on Monday afternoon in the area of the coastal town of Alibag when one of them jumped into the water for a swim but was swept away by the current.
The other brother jumped into the water to save him, but both of them drowned.
“I met Alan and Israel during the preparations of the cricket team of the Jews of Mumbai before they left for the Maccabiah Games and I even got to join their practice,” Israel’s Consul General in Mumbai Kobbi Shoshani said, according to Ynet. This is a huge loss for the family, the community and all of us. My heart is broken.”
Heavy rains fell in Mumbai and surrounding areas overnight, with further stormy weather predicted to follow, officials said according to NDTV.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said on Saturday it had successfully accounted for all Israelis in India who had been unreachable amid flooding and monsoon rains in the country during which over 100 people had been killed.
No Israelis were injured.
