The Israel Defense Forces eliminated a senior Hezbollah terrorist on Tuesday night who had been commanding a compound near the Israeli border, the military announced on Wednesday.
According to the IDF, the unnamed operative had been working to reestablish the Iranian-backed group’s presence in Yater, a village located less than five miles from Israel’s northern frontier.
“Throughout the war, the terrorist directed attacks against IDF soldiers and the State of Israel,” the military said, adding that his recent efforts to rebuild the compound in Yater represented a “blatant violation” of the November ceasefire understandings between Jerusalem and Beirut.
The situation in Lebanon remains volatile following the expiration of the truce on Feb. 18. The deal ended over a year of war, after Hezbollah began attacking Israel the day after the Hamas-led massacre on Oct. 7, 2023.
Defense Minister Israel Katz repeatedly warned that the ceasefire deal with Beirut would be void if Hezbollah refuses to withdraw from Southern Lebanon as required by the agreement.
Although Jerusalem has withdrawn most of its ground forces since the war ended, it still controls five strategic positions in Southern Lebanon.
Israeli officials have stated that the IDF will retain control of these areas until the Lebanese army demonstrates it can maintain security there.
On Monday, an Israeli aircraft eliminated a terrorist of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force in Southern Lebanon’s Majdal Zoun area, only some three miles north of the de facto border with the Jewish state.
The Radwan Force is Hezbollah’s elite unit, aimed at infiltrating Israeli territory and capturing areas around the country’s northern frontier.
