Israel’s Foreign Ministry sharply criticized British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband after he accused Israel of blocking medicines from entering the Gaza Strip and described conditions there as “horrific.”
In a video posted on social media, Miliband said he had just emerged from a meeting with people who had been in Gaza or were currently working on the ground.
“Frankly, it was horrific what is unfolding,” Miliband said. “You know, the stories that people were telling me of medicines being blocked, children dying while waiting for vital life-saving treatment.”
“When you hear that account of what is happening, you know that we as a UK government, as the Prime Minister has said, have got to act and act more decisively than we have,” he added.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry fired back, accusing Miliband of relying on unverified accounts while ignoring information available to the British government.
“If the Foreign Secretary were interested in facts rather than stories, he would know that there are no restrictions whatsoever on the entry of medicines into the Gaza Strip, and that no medicines are being blocked,” the ministry said.
According to the ministry, 22,500 tons of medical supplies have entered Gaza since the ceasefire began, while Gazans continue to leave the territory for medical treatment, including 200 people over the past two weeks.
The ministry noted that Britain is a member of the International Gaza Support Center, which helps facilitate the delivery of medical aid into the Strip, arguing that Miliband therefore has access to information about aid entering Gaza.
“And of course, the British Foreign Secretary is well aware of all this,” the ministry said. “But apparently, facts matter less (when making a video for a political audience).”
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee issued an even more blistering response, accusing the British government of hostility toward Jews.

The exchange marks the latest clash between Jerusalem and London, following a bitter dispute between Miliband and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar over Israeli construction in the E1 area of Judea and Samaria.
Miliband recently condemned plans for 1,234 homes in E1 as an “unacceptable and destructive act” and warned that Britain was preparing a “comprehensive set of measures” in response.
Sa’ar fired back, accusing the British government of “systematically acting against Israel” and of applying a double standard to the Jewish state.
“It is absurd for Britain to lecture the Jewish people about where they may live in their historic tiny homeland,” Sa’ar said.
He also warned that Israel would respond if London moved ahead with punitive measures.
“We are prepared,” Sa’ar said. “If they do, there will be a reaction.”
