Israel has been spending millions on the treatment of Syrian patients. Over 1,200 Syrians have benefited from Israeli care and funds.
An official document authored by the Ministry of Health reveals that Israel has spent NIS 32,487,415 (about $9,000,000) since the beginning of 2013 on the treatment of wounded Syrians seeking medical treatment in Israel.
The information was released as part of a report addressing the expenses of four northern hospitals in Tiberius, Tzfat, Nahariya and Kiryat Shmona, which have been treating Syrians wounded in the country’s civil war.
These numbers do not include the funds targeted by the Ministry of Defense and the IDF for this cause. The Syrians are usually treated at IDF field hospitals before being hospitalized in Israeli medical centers.
Highest Quality Treatment
YNET reports that on September 27, three seriously wounded Syrian children were brought to the Ziv Medical Center in Tzfat (Safed). They were cared for at the trauma unit and are expected to undergo further treatment.
“I’m not interested in the military situation or the circumstances that brought them here, only in the medical circumstances and what they’ve been experiencing medically since they were wounded,” Dr. Hussain Amar, head of the emergency room, told YNET. “It’s always hard to receive wounded children, but this is one of the worst cases we’ve seen here since the fighting started. It breaks your heart to receive children in such a condition, the effect of the shrapnel on their body is much more serious than in adults’ bodies,” he added.
Ziv has treated 376 Syrians in total, including 50 children.
On September 28, a severely wounded 10-year-old and an injured man in his 20s were brought to a northern Israeli hospital. On October 2, Poriya Hospital in Tiberius received a 23-year-old Syrian man with shrapnel wounds, its 106th Syrian patient.
A Syrian opposition leader who has recently visited Israel stated: ““I came to the Ziv Medical Center to thank the hospital for treating hundreds of men, women and children who have received the highest quality treatment, and emotional support following the difficult events they have experienced during the war in Syria. This treatment is not only for the wounded children and women, it is for the entire Syrian people.”
