After more than a year devoid of any direct contact, Netanyahu called Abbas on the occasion of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Friday to offer his good wishes for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr – Festival of Breaking the Fast – following the month of Ramadan.

The Prime Minister told Abbas that the citizens of Israel want peace and that Israel would continue to move in the direction of regional stability.

Abbas reportedly thanked Netanyahu for the call and expressed hope for achieving peace in the coming year.

This was the first conversation the two leaders are known to have held in over a year. The last time they spoke was in June 2014, when Netanyahu called Abbas to ask for his assistance in tracking down the three Israeli teenagers who were abducted and murdered by Palestinian terrorists.

Diplomatic connections between Israel and the PA as well as attempts at achieving a diplomatic accord ended in April 2014 after the Palestinians sabotaged the US-led negotiations by launching an international campaign to delegitimize Israel and attacking the Jewish state at international and legal forums.

Petition to the United States and European Union

We demand that all funding of the PA be stopped immediately. The brutal murder of Israelis committed by Palestinian terrorists throughout Israel is the latest result of ongoing PA incitement against Israeli citizens. Funding the PA means funding terror.
