A new synagogue dedicated to the memory of murdered IDF soldier and former hostage Noa Marciano was inaugurated this week at Modi’in Center Railway Station, creating a lasting tribute in one of Israel’s busiest public spaces.
Marciano, a surveillance soldier in the IDF’s 414th Battalion, was kidnapped from the Nahal Oz military post during Hamas’ October 7 attack. She was later murdered in captivity at Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital. Her body was recovered by the IDF and returned to Israel for burial in November 2023.
For Marciano’s family, dedicating a synagogue in her memory carries special meaning.
“We will now be able to continue commemorating Noa through prayer and Torah study that will take place in the synagogue in her memory,” her father, Avi Marciano, said during the ceremony. “I thank everyone at Israel Railways who stood by us, supported our family, and helped make this memorial project for our Noa a reality.”
The synagogue will serve train passengers, railway employees, and residents of the surrounding area while ensuring that thousands of people who pass through the station each day encounter Noa’s story and legacy.
The dedication ceremony was attended by senior Israel Railways officials, Modi’in Mayor Haim Bibas, the city’s chief rabbi, members of the Marciano family, railway employees, and guests who came to honor her memory.
Israel Railways Chairman Moshe Shimoni, who said he has accompanied the Marciano family since October 7, reflected on the family’s resilience in the face of unimaginable loss.
“I witnessed the tremendous pain alongside the courageous decision to continue telling Noa’s story,” he said. “There is no place that symbolizes continuity more than a synagogue bearing her name. Every prayer recited here will also carry Noa’s name.”
Transportation Ministry Director General Moshe Ben Zaken said the synagogue will serve as “a place of prayer, strength, and living remembrance,” giving travelers and employees an opportunity to pause, remember Noa’s courage, and carry her legacy forward.
For the Marciano family, the new synagogue ensures that even amid the daily rhythm of commuters rushing to their destinations, Noa’s memory will continue to inspire faith, remembrance, and hope for years to come.
