Israel’s Speaker of the Knesset MK Amir Ohana on Monday was in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, for a series of high-level meetings. Among those he met were Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Supreme Court President Nino Gvenetadze, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilia Darchiashvili, and other key officials.

The Knesset Speaker’s official visit to Georgia was at the invitation Papuashvili.

In addition to dialogues with senior government officials, Speaker MK Ohana also engaged with leaders of the local Jewish community, honored the family of Georgian Righteous Among the Nations, Sergei Metreveli, with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Knesset, and was set to co-launch a cutting-edge hydroponic agriculture research and development center with Georgia’s Minister of Agriculture.

During his discussions with Georgia’s political leaders, Speaker MK Ohana stated: “Our countries share a robust friendship that is built on historical ties between the nations that stretch back more than 2,600 years. The diplomatic meetings with senior government officials, as well as the events scheduled during my visit, demonstrate not only the depth of our relationship, but also the diverse areas of collaboration between our nations, as befits close allies.”

The Knesset Speaker further elaborated that the “Iranian forces that destabilize our region adversely impact the security of both Israel and Georgia. The outstanding level of security cooperation between us has saved lives. It is crucial to send a clear and unequivocal message that our countries will stand together, strong and resilient, in the fight against terrorism.”

At the end of the reception in the Georgian Parliament, the Knesset Speaker expressed his gratitude towards the Georgian people and Chairman Papuashvili for their hospitality. He also indicated that he is looking forward to reciprocating the hospitality by hosting Papuashvili in the Knesset in the near future.
