On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Israel will unveil a photo exhibition at the U.N. headquarters in New York that features Holocaust survivors from Israel and around the world, the Israeli mission announced Monday.

Israel’s Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon is to inaugurate the exhibition, his office said.

It was put together by the Lonka Project, “a photographic tribute to the last Holocaust survivors with us today,” according to the project’s website.

The effort was led by photographers Rina Castelnuovo and Jim Hollander. The exhibit at the U.N. is to remain open from January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, through February 7.

“Throughout 2019, some 250 of the world’s leading professional photographers, in some 24 countries,  generously contributed their time and talent, each capturing a Holocaust survivor in the context that makes a unique and memorable statement about their lives,” says the project.

The survivors have been living in such places as Jerusalem, London, Johannesburg, Paris, and New York.

The effort is resulting in the publication of a book in addition to the artistic exhibition, says the Lonka Project.

The undertaking is marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland.

The campaign is named after “Lonka (Dr. Elonora Nass), who, as a young teenager, survived five Nazi death camps, then built her life in Israel. She passed away in 2018,” says the Israeli mission at the U.N.

“The stories of these Holocaust survivors’ heroism are an example to the nations of the world,” Danon said. “Through their experiences, we must remind the world of two things: that the Holocaust was the most evil crime in history and its lesson must never be forgotten.”

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is annually marked on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

It was “designated by the United Nations in 2005 as an international day of commemoration to honor the victims of the Holocaust,” notes Israel’s Foreign Ministry.
