British authorities have launched an investigation into one of the country’s largest Muslim charities over allegations of providing financial and material support to Hamas throughout the nearly three years of war in Gaza — claims Israeli officials have repeatedly raised.
The United Kingdom’s Charity Commission, the independent regulator responsible for overseeing registered charities in England and Wales, announced last week that it had opened a statutory inquiry into the Al-Khair Foundation, a British-based Muslim humanitarian organization that provides aid and development assistance internationally, over concerns surrounding its activities following the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
In a press release, the Al-Khair Foundation pledged to work with local authorities to address the allegations, review its operations and take any necessary corrective measures, while reaffirming its commitment to transparency and compliance with UK regulations.
“We are a proudly British humanitarian organization, a registered charity with a distinguished record spanning more than two decades of delivering humanitarian assistance and alleviating poverty,” the statement reads.
“Our work is strongly guided by Islamic values of compassion, integrity and service to those most in need,” it continues. “Everywhere we work we are firmly committed to ensuring that the funds entrusted to us by our generous donors are used for their intended purpose: meeting the humanitarian needs of poor and marginalised people in the communities we serve.”
For years, Israeli officials have warned that some international charities and humanitarian organizations operating in Gaza have diverted funds and resources to the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.
Among those organizations, the Israeli government has repeatedly accused the Al-Khair Foundation of transferring funds to the terror group “under the guise of humanitarian activity” and employing at least one senior Hamas official.
The British probe comes after the foundation’s director, Mohammad Yousef Hasna, was arrested in the UK last week over US allegations that he exploited his senior role to channel money and humanitarian supplies to Hamas.
According to US federal prosecutors, Hasna, a 45-year-old Turkish national, worked closely with senior Hamas leaders to facilitate the delivery of food, supplies and funding to the terror group while disguising the transfers as humanitarian aid.
US officials allege that Hasna exploited his senior position at an international NGO to solicit donations and funnel money, supplies and other resources to Hamas, using the organization’s humanitarian operations as a cover for supporting the terrorist group.
Now, Hasna has been ordered detained pending extradition proceedings to New York, where he is expected to face federal charges over the alleged scheme.
As head of the organization, Hasna is also accused of manipulating photographs and documents to conceal Hamas’s role as the ultimate recipient of donated funds and supplies, while misleading donors about the true nature of its humanitarian operations.
US prosecutors have also alleged that Hasna maintained close ties with senior Hamas leader Ghazi Hamad, with messages between the two allegedly detailing the transfer of millions of dollars directly to the terrorist organization.
Over the past three years, Hasna and Hamad allegedly worked together to facilitate the movement, storage and distribution of humanitarian aid and other supplies to Hamas in Gaza while concealing the terrorist group’s involvement.
The indictment notes that the Al-Khair Foundation’s income more than doubled in two years, rising from $41 million in 2023 to $81 million in 2024 and about $100 million in 2025.
It also alleges that Hasna arranged cash transfers to Hamad, citing a ledger that recorded nearly $5.4 million in incoming funds and $3.1 million in expenses.
