When the German army invaded Greece in 1941, Roza Eskenazi was was known throughout Greece for her “rebetiko” style of singing, which was all the rage in Greece at the time.
Known as “The Queen of Rebetiko,” the Jewish Eskenazi used her privileged position and fake baptismal papers to support the resistance undetected and save many Jewish lives from deportation to Auschwitz.
