While most Jews today have never experienced Sukkot during a pandemic, a prominent 19th-century rabbi set an example of how Jewish people should behave during such a situation.

Rabbi Akiva Eger was a leading Talmudic scholar and foremost leader of European Jewry in the early 19th century. During cholera outbreaks, he advocated for social distancing practices in the Jewish community, much like the restrictions we are experiencing today.
