Gal Gadot’s casting as Cleopatra was met with fierce backlash over the fact that a Jewish-Israeli actress had been chosen to play the iconic Queen of Egypt.

“Wonder Woman” Gal Gadot recently announced that she will play Cleopatra in an upcoming film on the Egyptian royal.

The social media backlash was swift and fierce, as haters complained that Gadot, as an Israeli of European background, should not play a historical figure from a north African country.

Why is a Jewish Israeli being singled out for playing Middle Eastern roles as if they have no roots in the region? Jews have been indigenous the region and in fact lived for thousands of years in Egypt.
