An Iron Dome defense system was successful in intercepting a Hamas drone flying into Israeli territory on Monday.

The IDF stated that its Air Defense troops intercepted an unmanned aircraft launched by the Hamas terrorist organization. The unmanned aircraft was downed when it crossed the sea.

The aircraft was monitored by the Air Control Unit throughout the incident, the IDF underscored.

“The IDF will continue to protect the skies of the State of Israel and its citizens,” it stated.

The incident is one of the most severe since Operation Guardian of the Walls in May. During the operation, the Iron Dome systems shot down at least three unmanned Hamas aircraft, and at least three more were shot down by other means.

The Iron Dome’s ability to intercept drones is fairly new and was unveiled in March.

Gaza-based terror organizations have in the past attempted to penetrate Israeli airspace with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), and Hamas has been working on developing aircraft that can be used for surveillance or attack missions.
