IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir met his Greek counterpart, Gen. Dimitrios Choupis, during an official visit to Israel, as the two countries continue to strengthen their strategic and military relationship.

The IDF said Choupis completed his visit after meeting Zamir, describing the trip as a reflection of the “strategic importance” of the longstanding military partnership between Israel and Greece.

Greece’s military said the relationship between the two countries continues to deepen as Jerusalem and Athens work together to confront shared challenges and promote stability in the region.

During his visit, Choupis also met Defense Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram, International Defense Cooperation Directorate chief Brig. Gen. (res.) Yair Kulas and Greek Ambassador to Israel Maya Solomou.

The Greek military chief was accompanied by Greece’s defense attaché in Israel and a senior delegation of officers from the Hellenic National Defense General Staff.

The visit comes at a sensitive moment in the eastern Mediterranean, as tensions between Israel and Turkey have intensified over Ankara’s growing military role in Syria.

Israel this week confirmed carrying out an airstrike on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur Airbase, saying Damascus had been on the verge of violating existing security understandings by permitting Turkish forces to deploy at the facility.

Turkey sharply rejected Israel’s explanation and accused Jerusalem of pursuing destabilizing policies, escalating an increasingly public dispute between the two regional powers.

Against that backdrop, Israel’s close military relationship with Greece carries additional strategic significance. Greece and Israel have developed extensive defense ties over the years, including military exercises, training and broader security cooperation.

Both the Israeli and Greek statements emphasized that Choupis’s visit was part of an established, long-term partnership, with Athens saying the two countries remain committed to expanding bilateral cooperation and addressing common regional challenges.
