Los miembros de la organización terrorista Hamas, que gobierna la Franja de Gaza con mano de hierro, junto con otros palestinos que se encontraban entre los 30,000 manifestantes que pululaban en la valla fronteriza con Israel, no eran pacíficos.

Arrojaron piedras y cócteles Molotov a las tropas de las IDF, lanzaron llantas hacia la frontera, blandieron cuchillos y dispararon a través de la valla de seguridad.

Hasta el momento, los enfrentamientos han resultado en la muerte de 17 palestinos. Once de los asesinados tenían vínculos directos con Hamas. Los otros estaban involucrados en actividades violentas o sospechosas o se les vio intentando atravesar la cerca fronteriza.

Hamas tiene un fuerte historial de usar civiles palestinos como «escudos humanos», sacrificándolos por el bien de una victoria de las relaciones públicas contra Israel.
