Despite the nuclear deal signed between the US-led P5+1 and Iran, Chairman of the Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, as well as other foreign policy leaders of the Islamic Republic, continue to stress that America is their chief enemy.

Yet another leading Iranian cleric declared that the US remains its number one enemy, despite the nuclear accord recently signed with the six global powers, and he vowed never to support a change in hostile foreign policy, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

Speaking to 86 clerics at the 18th meeting of the Assembly of Experts, Chairman of the Assembly Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, one of the highest religious authorities in the Islamic Republic, asserted: “US crimes cannot be numbered, and Iran sees the US as its primary enemy.”

He blamed all the turmoil and violence in the Middle East on the US and Israel, who “are manipulating the developments” in Middle East to secure Israel’s “Zionist interests.”

“The US dream for toppling Iranian popular governing system will not come true,” he stated.

Yazdi also praised the Iranian nuclear negotiating team for “their timeless efforts in defense of Iran’s rights.”

The Assembly of Experts of Iran is a deliberative body of Mujtahids, or Islamic theologians, that is charged with electing and removing the Supreme Leader of Iran and supervising his activities.

Members of the assembly are elected from lists of candidates by direct public vote for eight-year terms. The number of members has ranged from 82 elected in 1982 to 88 in 2006. Yazdi was elected in March 2015. President Hassan Rouhani, who has managed to convince some Westerners that he is Iran’s beacon of moderation, is a member.

Yazdi was echoing similar statements made by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in August that Tehran will always oppose the US and combat its policies in the region.

Sign the Petition to Stop a Nuclear Iran

The US Congress must ensure that sanctions against Iran remain in force until the nuclear threat is completely eliminated.

I strongly oppose easing sanctions before the nuclear threat from Iran has been eliminated. Allowing Iran to enrich uranium without being subject to 'anytime, anywhere' inspections is extremely dangerous and unacceptable. Iran's nuclear program must be stopped.
