BDS this! Israel is fostering relations with yet another influential country. This is the first time a leader from Singapore has ever visited Israel in an official capacity.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has begun a four day official visit to Israel on Monday. Leading a delegation of some 60 people, Loong is accompanied by Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan and Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad.

Loong is the first Singaporean prime minister ever to visit the Jewish State.

Singapore established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1969, four years after Singapore achieved independence.

Israel and Singapore’s relations have been characterized by a good friendship that began during the tenure of Singapore’s founder, first prime minister and father of the current prime minister, the late Lee Kuan Yew. The two countries enjoy cooperation in a variety of fields.

A bilateral cooperation agreement on international aid, focusing on joint assistance to third countries, was signed on Sunday.

Singapore is a hub for Israeli business and regional trade, while a growing number of members of both business communities seek opportunities for joint operations in biotechnology, IT and software industries, where both countries’ relative advantages are most valuable.

Several bilateral agreements provide a solid framework for substantiating cooperation in areas such as healthcare, investments and technological research and development, highlighting the governments’ efforts to further deepen ties to the benefit of both peoples.

Cultural exchanges between the two countries have been accentuated by encouraging the participation of Israeli artists in international events in Singapore, cultivating a broad interest in Israeli performing arts in areas such as dance, art, theater and music. The yearly Film Festival has grown to become a cornerstone in the structured framework of joint activities between Israel and Singapore.
