Israel is dispatching a medical aid team to Ethiopia to help it contend with the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country.

The delegation of medical personnel from the Assuta Ashdod Public Hospital was initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Department of International Cooperation.

The delegation will leave in about two weeks for a period of 14 days. The team will be headed by Dr. Assaf Peretz, who until recently managed the Corona ward at Assuta hospital.

Peretz noted that “the possibility of the state sending out aid missions to deal with the corona was, until recently, [not a] reality. Israel has a moral and ethical duty to act wherever it can contribute its knowledge and experience in dealing with the virus”.

“To take part in such a delegation is a great privilege and an enormous Israeli pride,” he added.

The Central for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted a “Level 4: Very High Level of COVID-19” alert for Ethiopia.

The east African country has so far registered over 246,000 cases and over 3,400 deaths.
