Israel may have yet another Islamic threat to face – the Egyptian Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis terror group has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State. What does this mean for Israel?

Israel may have a new threat to contend with – Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, Egypt’s most active terrorist group, has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State (IS or ISIS) terror Group, Reuters reports.

“After trusting in God, we have decided to swear allegiance to the Emir (leader) of the faithful, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (the Islamic State leader), Caliph of the Muslims in Syria and Iraq and in other countries,” the group said in a statement quoted by Reuters.

Other reports in the Arab world claim that IS announced the establishment of a caliphate in the Sinai peninsula, the first steps towards its “advance on Jerusalem.” The report claims that IS has called on Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis to “destroy police checkpoints, fire RPG rockets at their rallying points and to show the world that God’s rule must be enforced.”

IS further called on the Jihadist terror group to attack the Iron Dome anti-rocket batterers, naming the southern Israeli city of Eilat as a possible target.

Responsible for Hundreds of Deaths

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis is responsible for multiple terror attacks against the Egyptian security forces. The terror group has killed hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police since the ousting of President Mohammed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is affiliated with Hamas.

The group also claimed responsibility for several rocket attacks on southern Israel.

Israel is already facing a threat posed by the Islamic State terror group in the north. It may have to face it in the south as well.
