Iran is preparing for the possibility of renewed war with the United States and threatening to dramatically widen the conflict if fighting resumes, including through possible ground incursions into neighboring countries and attempts to sink American warships, according to a report Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal.
Iranian officials have warned both publicly and privately that additional U.S. strikes would trigger a broader and more aggressive response than previous rounds of fighting, the Journal reported.
Among the scenarios raised by Iranian officials are possible ground incursions into neighboring countries. Tehran has also threatened to target American forces more aggressively, including by attempting to sink U.S. warships and kill their crews.
The warnings come as Iran strengthens its defenses and rebuilds military capabilities damaged during previous fighting. The Journal reported that Tehran is fortifying sensitive sites and replenishing its missile and drone capabilities.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach an agreement with Washington appear to be struggling.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Tehran considers the latest U.S. response to an Iranian proposal to end the war “insufficient,” saying Washington had accepted some Iranian conditions while other issues remained unresolved.
Rezaei also warned that if intense fighting resumes, Iran could target regional “cables, data centers, AI facilities and other sites,” potentially expanding the confrontation beyond military targets.
The threats come amid signs of heightened military preparations on both sides.
The United States has been reinforcing its military presence in the Middle East, while Israel has also maintained a high level of readiness amid assessments that fighting with Iran could resume.
The Pentagon has developed options for renewed military operations against Iran, while Tehran continues to warn that another attack would be met with a significantly broader response.
