Israel’s communities adjacent to Gaza are safer now with the construction of advanced hi-tech “smart fences” at the border.

Israel has completed the construction of fences that surround the Israeli communities in the vicinity of Gaza Strip, the Ministry of Defense announced Tuesday.

The project was carried out in the wake of Operation Protective Edge, during which Hamas terrorists from Gaza tried to infiltrate Israel via terror tunnels and attack civilian targets.

Tens of kilometers of hi-tech “smart fences” and technological detecting systems were deployed around 12 communities in recent months at a cost of NIS 30 million (Approx. $7,800,000). Two more communities will be fortified soon.

The fences relay a warning signal to the command center, enabling security forces to respond rapidly to an infiltration attempt by terrorists.

“The project of establishing smart fences around communities in the south is an important element and one of many solutions the security system is implementing to secure the communities,” said Yitzchak Levi, a senior Defense Ministry official.

He noted that the fence will provide the responding security forces with an effective warning on any attempt to attack the communities from the ground.

This project joins another undertaking to implement an effective detection and warning system against Hamas tunnels running under the border from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
