The United States and Israel are discussing the possibility of imposing a land blockade on Iran as part of a broader strategy to increase economic pressure on the Islamic Republic, The Telegraph reported Friday, citing Israeli and American sources familiar with the discussions.
According to the report, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed increasing pressure on Iran through both “kinetic and non-kinetic means” during their Oval Office meeting on Tuesday.
The land blockade proposal is reportedly one of several options under consideration following months of military strikes, an ongoing naval blockade, and economic pressure aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear and military ambitions.
The report comes days after the U.S. resumed strikes on Iranian targets in response to Tehran’s missile attack on American forces in Jordan and as Netanyahu concludes a week of high-level meetings in Washington focused heavily on Iran and regional security.
The proposal would involve persuading countries bordering Iran to tighten or close key border crossings, restricting the regime’s ability to import goods and military equipment while limiting its exports.
Implementing such a plan would require cooperation from several of Iran’s neighbors, including Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, making it both diplomatically and logistically challenging.
The Telegraph reported that a land blockade is one of several options being weighed by Washington and Jerusalem. Others include pursuing a negotiated agreement with Tehran, maintaining the current naval blockade, or resuming a broader military campaign if diplomacy fails.
The newspaper also noted that discussion of a land blockade could itself be intended to divert Iranian attention from other potential military or diplomatic moves under consideration.
A White House official told The Telegraph that President Trump “has all options at his disposal.”
