The Jewish people needed water, so God told Moses to SPEAK to a certain rock that would give the people water. Instead, Moses HITS the rock – twice.

The people get water but the scene is chaotic, culminating with Moses’ and Aaron’s worst nightmare: They were banned on entering the Land of Israel seemingly because they didn’t follow God’s instructions: “speak” not “hit.”
